A top federal prosecutor in Washington resigned Tuesday [February 18] after refusing an order from Justice Department leaders to direct a bank to freeze accounts holding $20 billion in climate change money allocated by former President Joe Biden’s climate spending law,” according to breaking news reported by Politico.

Denise Cheung, lead of the criminal division at the U.S. Attorney’s Office, spent 20 years at the office working on white collar litigation. Her resignation follows a growing wave of career lawyers and legal professionals leaving the Department of Justice (DOJ) over perceived misconduct. These include several high-profile resignations from DOJ’s Public Integrity Section and Manhattan federal prosecutor’s office over handling of corruption case against embattled New York City Mayor Eric Adams.
