In what shaped up to be the most expensive judicial race in U.S. history, the progressive candidate Hon. Susan Crawford won resoundingly against the Republican-backed Brian Schmiel. Many advocates view this as a critical win by maintaining the 4-3 liberal majority on the Wisconsin Supreme Court—ensuring the court remains a firewall against continuous far-right rollbacks on abortion access, voting rights, and fair representation.
This race wasn’t just about one seat—it was about whether Wisconsin’s highest court would continue to defend democratic values or slide into reactionary politics. It was about whether abortion rights would be upheld or further stripped away. And thanks to strong voter turnout and organizing on the ground, the people won.

With a conservative legislature already attacking voting rights and bodily autonomy, people power, canvassing, turning out in the streets has turned out to be a more salient and multipronged political mobilization strategy that is leading to tangible setbacks for this Administration. Not to mention the importance of securing the highest court in a battleground state that could otherwise be weaponized to undermine free and fair elections in 2028! The margins for this race after Musk wasted $25 million of his own money would not have been so stark if not for the momentum that continues to surge as millions mobilized across +1,200 towns and cities holding “Hands Off!” demonstrations across the nation later that week on Saturday, April 5.
And here’s the real kicker: despite the majority support for streamlining government efficiency, the DOGE agenda led at the behest of the richest man on the planet is broadly unpopular. The resistance is resilient, and Wisconsin just reminded the nation of what’s possible when we the people RESIST, BUILD, AND WIN.
